Meet the LincsQuad coaches – part 2

In the second installment of meet the coaches, Catherine Butterill speaks to Ed Smith, Mark Turner and  LincsQuad’s very own weatherman Tony England.

Ed Smith, Level 2 BC Coach

Why did you decide to be a coach?

My 2 boys Ben and Adam started attending the sessions, Steve Cannings worked out that  I had a lot of knowledge and experience of bike racing and suggested that rather than standing just watching, would I be willing to get involved? So I said “yes!”

Have you a favourite discipline? If so which?

Cyclo-cross, I’ve raced it on and off since racing as a junior ( I’m 46 now!) but it is something I love to race and watch because it is so hard ( if you’re trying!) but probably the easiest and cheapest form of cycle sport to compete in.

Have you a favourite event?

Any of the Brigg Sprint Tri’s, perfect for beginners and experienced racers alike. Great courses, great support and not too long!

What’s the best words of advice you’d give to a our members?

If it’s your first multi sport race, do not let other peoples expensive kit spook you! Someone still has to pedal it!!!

What’s the best thing about LincsQuad?

It’s extremely welcoming no matter what your level, come join us and if you can, put something back

Mark Turner, Level 2 BC Coach

Why did you decide to be a coach?

Stephen Cannings asked me very nicely if I’d like to be a cycle coach. As I was attending the sessions as a parent I thought “why not?”

Have you a favourite discipline? If so which?

Cycling is probably my favourite although there is something very special about open water swimming at Hatfield. I have a love/hate relationship with running.

Have you a favourite event?

Team relays is brilliant for the social side. As a race the Clumber Park Duathlon is nice at the start of the season : nice surroundings, not much travel and well organised.

What’s the best words of advice you’d give to a our members?

You can do anything once you set your mind to it. I’m an overweight 44 year old who’s completed an Ironman….

What’s the best thing about LincsQuad?

The ‘family’ feel and the way we are all supportive of each other.

Tony England, Level 1 BTF Coach

Why did you decide to be a coach?

As with most who decide to take on a coaching role it would be to give something back to the club & help the members achieve their goals.

Have you a favourite discipline? If so which?

Yer, swimming (hehehehe) Nope can’t say I do.

Have you a favourite event?

Nope still looking for it.

What’s the best words of advice you’d give to a our members?

Don’t be afraid to try something new.

What’s the best thing about LincsQuad?

The atmosphere & buzz that is currently going on at the sessions that are now put on by the club.
